COHAP Outreach Corporation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a mission to give a chance in life and restore hope in those formerly incarcerated as well as veterans who have served their country, with new skillful trades, education, and housing needs. Our specific and primary purpose is to raise the economic job skills and educational levels on housing and consumer financing to prevent homelessness.
Every year, nearly 600,000 people are released from imprisonment and attempt to rejoin their communities as contributing members of society. Thus, arrests of youth under the age of 18 peaked in 1996 at nearly 2.7 million, although the number in 2016 was 68% less than the 1996 peak. In Texas, veterans comprise fifty percent (50%) of the population behind bars. In 2021, there were 16.5 million veterans in the US. Over 630,000 homeless people in America, and 67,495 of them are veterans. Over 1 in 10 homeless people in America are veterans. Also, around 23,000 children leave the foster care system in the United States every year. After reaching 18, 20% of foster children will become homeless. Only one in every two foster children aged out of the system will have a job by 24.
A simple web search in the Google era ensures that no one can ever escape the history of those in a disadvantaged situation. Despite pursuing employment at higher rates than the general population, formerly incarcerated individuals due to their reputation, age out of foster care youths due to lack of education, and veterans due to their age are half as likely to find work as the general population and face unemployment rates five times higher.
Could you help us reach our donation goal? Together, we can end the cycle of recidivism by providing formerly incarcerated people a plan and a pathway out of the Texas prison system that will help them avoid re-entering the dark side and prevent the increased number of homeless for veterans and aged out of foster care youths.
